@YOUNG

Not so much the case: LTE can be deployed in the near term for fixed-nomadic use and for 'true mobility' as mobile devices become available in the 2011-2012 time frame. While it cannot be said that LTE is going to be a mature mobile network for up to a few years, that more aggressive envelop of capabilities is not what WiMAX delivers today.

WiMAX is a mature network in delivering many aspects of what operators may want but both WiMAX and LTE are continuing to evolve at a rapid pace. Increased cell-edge and bandwidth performance, higher order MIMO, competitive mobile devices... are continuing to evolve in the standards and commercial offerings such that maturity of the emerging field is not fully baked into the pie.

This is the same kind of euphoria which is hallmark of Telecom industry, the bar tends to be set always set one notch higher.. when 802.16 was stable, vendors spoke merits of 16e then oscillating to LTE.. and then 16m.. WiMAX I agree is proven and will be the first choice of Operators who want to make an early entry and capture market after all they are paying high spectrum charges and need quick ROI..
Equipment Vendors who have both technologies ( 802.16 and TD-LTE) & aggressive in my opinion will emerge winners since can promise upgrades or overlay networks to capture more contracts agree with BP that it will not be ready before Q12011.

In Korea BUSAN APEC conference , WiMAX first initial demonstration proofed , 5 years back, Present it has now stable echo system and partners 3'rd party equipement HA, AAA and Device manager which is proofed performance.

Recentely , TD-LTE technology has just demonstrated its performance. It will take next several years will take more several year's to show variety line up of devices and chipset vendors.

Migration to compact base stations will do wonders for the operator business case.

The next step beyond what you describe in the article are true compact base stations that integrate the base band and RF into a single all-outdoor box, and are no larger than a typical remote radio head. Such a strategy allows maximal deployment flexibility and makes it possible to deploy on non-traditional mounting assets such as utility poles and walls.

My company PureWave Networks already offers such solutions today. You can see for yourself on our website (www.pwnets.com)

Dear BP,

Yes, your points are absolutely valid as an independent observer.

WiMAX is available today with price points, which are acceptable to Indian customers. Same set of equipment can be upgraded/migrated to 16m or LTE based on eco system developed in the future.

Regards,
Hitesh Shukla

[...] The growth of data centric devices is humongous and mobile data will roughly double each year from 2008 to 2013″[1]. According to Cisco average broadband connection generates 11.4 gigabytes of Internet traffic per month, or 375 megabytes per day. Reports from the early 4G mobile WiMAX based broadband networks from Russian and US has some analogous findings where their average traffic per customer is 10 Gigabytes per month [2]. I have earlier blogged about data projections for next decade and it looks like the Mobile Internet traffic will grow at a compound annual rate of at-least 50 percent. By 2020 average mobile internet connection from 3G and 4G handsets will generate 22.5 Gigabytes of traffic, and internet centric device will generate 171.7 Gigabytes of traffic.
It is quite interesting.

But who can tell me when the LTE can be really utilized in the countires like India and China? Considering the truth that there is no any commercial handset annouced by any volume vendors mentioned in the article now, it looks not before 2014 or even later. Anyway, see how long the people was keeping wait for 3G in these countires.

I am not sure whether this transition is natural or faced due to global slowdown of WiMAX network deployments. As far as I know , Alvarion has bagged some good wimax deployment notably VMAX, Comstar( Moscow), Linkem(rome) , Aria, digital Bridge etc.

Comstar has deployed has crossed 200+ BTS and VMAX is near to completion. http://wimax.comstar.ru/map/
